Ashleigh

The fucking nerve of her.

She talked back to me? To me?

In front of my friends.

In front of Dillon.

After everyone had left, I went into one of the guest rooms on the far side of the house, carrying a tray of glasses. One by one, I hurled them at the wall.

I hadn’t let myself do this in a long time, and it felt good. Very good. Hearing the smash, watching the glass explode, it felt cleansing. I left the glass glittering in the plush carpet, took a deep breath, and walked out of the room in the ballerina posture Mummy had been so adamant on my whole life.

“She came back,” Mummy said coolly when I sat down across from her at the table in the dining room.

“I know,” I said, not daring to let any of my irritation bleed into my voice as I filled my plate from the assortment of breakfast items set out.

Mummy did not stand for any hint of disrespect.

“I believe I asked you if you were prepared for this, did I not?”

I didn’t answer that, instead tearing my croissant into a thousand soft pieces. Part of me dared her to say something again about my weight. Luckily for both of us, she didn’t.

“Then perhaps you do not truly understand what is at stake here?”

“How can we be sure, though,” I said, my annoyance showing itself by questioning her, which I knew not to do. “How can we really be sure that Daddy left a secret inheritance that we’ll get if she gives up?”

Her eyes narrowed. “I knew your father better than anyone. Better than you, better than that slut of his, better than his own mother. He was a businessman above all, and there was nothing he respected more than perseverance. No, the last woman standing in this will receive all of the money. I’m sure of it. I will give her one last chance to do it my way. If she will not, then it’s all on your shoulders.” She looked at me, her eyes sharp. “You’ve failed thus far, but maybe you will surprise me and succeed in the end.”

I lifted my eyes, suddenly blazing with fury. “Or maybe if you hadn’t spent all of our portion of the inheritance, we wouldn’t be dealing with this problem at all. It’s your fault we’re living off of this stipend that Mr. Cumberland controls. This is all. Your. Fault,” I ground out. But as soon as the words had left my mouth, I wanted to snatch them back.

Mummy stood, smoothing her pencil skirt with care, and crooked a finger at me. I hesitated but knew I had no choice. I stood as well and walked over to her.

“Don’t you ever say anything like that to me again,” she hissed and slapped me across the face.

I raised a hand to my stinging cheek, dropping my eyes to the floor, my anger drowned in fear.

“Do you hear me, Ashleigh? I can do this with or without you. Which would you prefer?”

“With you,” I said quietly, keeping my eyes on the floor.
